Igoumenitsa

Igumenica, Grčka

Legend says that the great Odysseus passed through Igoumenitsa numerous times on his great adventures and sailing voyages around the country. The city was called “Grava”, which means “cave” during the medieval and Ottoman eras.

Later received its current name “Igoumenitsa” (“Commander”).

The town is located in northwestern Greece, on the coast of the Ionian Sea, and through the port the country is connected by sea with Italy.

Igoumenitsa is a coastal Greek city and an important port.

Igoumenitsa has two ports - domestic and international. Inland is a point of honor for the Ionian islands of Corfu and Paxos, and also provides a connection to the important Greek port of Patras. The international terminal connects the city with some of the important Italian ports, such as Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Trieste.

The seafront is full with tavernas serving up marinated meats, fresh fish sourced from local waters, and Mediterranean dishes.
