Wilanow Castle

Varšava, Poljska

The history of Wilanów Palace, a Baroque royal summer residence, begins on April 23, 1677, when King Jan III Sobieski became the owner of the estate. The palace has survived through the centuries, including both World Wars. Initially, the residence was small, but after the king’s victory in battle in 1683, he decided to expand it. After his death, the palace became home to other aristocratic families, with some of the best architects carrying out numerous reconstructions over time. The last owner founded Poland’s first public museum here in 1805. Today, the palace welcomes over 300,000 visitors annually, and its gardens attract more than one million people each year.
