Tripoli

Tripoli, Libija

Tripoli has been the capital of Libya since 1963. The name comes from Greek and means "three cities". It was founded in the 7th century BC. from the Phoenicians. The city was originally called Oea. The settlement was later called Tripolis because of the proximity of the neighboring Leptis Magna Sabratha, with which it had close relations. But unlike them, which were abandoned many centuries ago, Tripoli has always been inhabited. Its history has recorded the rule of Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Spaniards, Turks. The only surviving monument from Roman times is an arch from the 2nd century - that of the emperor Marcus Aurelius. But from later, Muslim times, the city offers a wealth of picturesque views around the medina - countless shops, fountains, mosques and above all - the Red Fort, the beautiful palace complex, now housing the incredible collection of the archaeological museum.
