The Archangel Michael refers to a miraculous icon in the island of Lesvos.
The legend of the creation of the icon shares the theme that the target of the raids was the Monastery of the Taxiarches (the Archangels). The pirates jeopardized the monks with death, unless they reveal the spot of the hidden village dwellers. When the monks refused, they all end up death except for one, named Gabriel who managed to hide
While the pirates where leaving, the beginner monk climbed to the roof of the monastery to be sure that the pirates had left. However, the pirates noticed him from afar and returned to kill him as well. A miracle saved the monk descending to the courtyard buried the bodies of his fellow brotherhood.
The monk still appreciated and admired for having witnessed the Archangel Michael.
