Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Mčeta, Gruzija

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, located in the town of Mtskheta, is one of the most crucial religious and cultural landmarks of Georgia, since it is believed to have been built on the spot where Christ's robe was buried.

The original Svetitskhoveli Cathedral dates back to the 4th century, but the current structure was built in the 11th century by King Bagrat III.

The exterior of the cathedral features complex decorations, surrounded by a beautiful garden, while the interior is decorated with amazing frescoes and mosaics. The highlight of the cathedral is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which is said to hold a piece of the True Cross.

The cathedral also contains the tombs of many Georgian kings and queens, including King Vakhtang Gorgasali, who is credited with founding Tbilisi.
