Studenitsa monastery was established in the end of XII c. by Stefan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Serbian state. It is situated by Studenitsa river, 39 km southwest of Kraljevo town in the outskirts of Golija mountain. This is the biggest and richest of all Orthodox monasteries in Serbia. It was included in World heritage list of UNESCO in 1986. The whole complex is surrounded by a tall defensive wall. There are two main churches. "St Virgin Mary" is located in the center of the complex. This XII-c. building is perfect example of the famous Raska school of art that is mix between the western Roman and eastern Byzantine styles. The interior is very spectacular with the precious works of Byzantine art from XIII and XIV c.
