The church of St. Vlas was built in the 14th century but was severely damaged by the earthquake in 1667 and subsequently destroyed by a fire in 1706. The church was rebuilt in its present baroque style between 1706 and 1714. The architect of the temple is the Venizelist Marino Gropeli. On the main altar there is a great gilded statue of St. Vlas, patron of Dubrovnik. In one hand, the saint holds a mock of the city, as it looked in the Middle Ages.
