Ranomafana, Madaskar

Ranomafana is a national park located about 8 hours from Tana (Antananarivo). It is best known for the discovery of the rare golden bamboo lemur in 1986, as well as the critically endangered greater bamboo lemur. Part of the park, which covers 42,000 hectares, is under special protection and closed to visitors. The area is mountainous and features varying types of tropical rainforest. Several rivers, both large and small, flow through the park. In addition to lemurs, the park is home to a wide variety of orchids. It experiences around 320 rainy days per year, with annual rainfall ranging between 2,300 and 4,000mm.
