Kaptol Hill

Zagreb, Hrvatska

The town of Zagreb was formed in the middle of the 19th century when two smaller towns were located on adjacent hills - Kaptol and Gradets. At that time, the city developed significantly and expanded in the south. The history of the Croatian capital's development began in the distant 1094, when the Hungarian King made the Roman Catholic Bishopric. It is for the first time in the historical sources that Zagreb is mentioned. Kaptol becomes a spiritual center, while on the neighboring hill Gradec it develops above all as a craft and trade center.

One of the most interesting places in Captol is the large square, in the middle of which stands a beautiful statue of the blessed Virgin Mary. Here is the cathedral "Ascension of the Virgin". Nearby are preserved numerous old-fashioned houses of different eras. Visitors of Captol can also see part of the medieval city fortress shaft.
