Bloody Bridge

Zagreb, Hrvatska

Few people know that there was a bridge in the very heart of Zagreb, about 100 meters from Ban Yelacic Square. This bridge was the main link between Kaptol and Gradets, the two small towns, from which the present-day Zagreb was formed. During the Middle Ages, they often fought each other. The controversial issues were mainly related to the common use of the waters of the Medverschak stream, separating the two cities, as well as various political issues. Even so, in 1397, the bishop of Kaptol excommunicated the inhabitants of Gradets from the church, forbidding them to receive a church sacrament. The many bits between the two cities are growing in cruel and bloody battles. After a merciless fight here at Christmas in 1667, he was called the Bloody Bridge. In 1899, following the flow regulation, Bloody Bridge proved to be unnecessary and was destroyed. Now there is no sign of a river or bridge on the surface, but the street built on the former bridge is also called the Bloody Bridge.
