Black church (known as Saint Mary) is believed to be the most prominent example of gothic art architecture in Romania. There was a small chapel at that place that was destroyed by the Tatars in 1242. The new building was constructed between XIV and XV centuries. In 1689 the Austrians started a fire in the church so the walls became black. This is how the name appeared. The church has 5 portals and a beautiful clock tower. Inside you can take a look at the unique collection of carpets brought here during the Middle age by travelling merchants to the Orient who wanted to donate something to God for the reason that they came back safe home. Here is the biggest church organ in South East Europe.
