Bhaktapur lies 12 km to the east of Kathmandu on a hill at an altitude of 1,401 m. Bhaktapur is one of three mediaeval city-states in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kathmandu Valley. It was one of the best-preserved until the 2015 earthquake caused catastrophic devastation and loss of life. Only a few temples were destroyed, so there are still lots to see and the community relies heavily on tourism.
