Belfast, with a population of 270,000, is the largest city and capital of Northern Ireland. Founded in 1701, the city was first part of the Kingdom of Ireland, and then became part of the United Kingdom. In 1922, when Ireland became independent, Northern Ireland remained under English rule. One of the most impressive buildings in the city, the municipality, built in 1906 in the neo-baroque style. The main place for walking, shopping and relaxing in Belfast is Victoria Square. After long renovations, in 2008, the square was reopened to visitors.
