
Bascarsija is an Oriental bazaar in the heart of Sarajevo. The construction began in the 15th century, during the reign of Isa-Beg Isakovic. Initially, there were built an inn and numerous shops. In the decades after, Sarajevo formed as one of the largest shopping centers on the Balkans with its mosques, madrases, hamams, libraries, clock tower as well as many public buildings. Оver the years many fires broke out and caused a great damage to Bascarsija. However, the preserved area of the carsija is yet the symbol of Sarajevo.
