
Antananarivo is the capital and largest city of Madagascar, with a population of 1,403,449. It is the administrative center of the Antananarivo Province. The city is located in the central part of the island, at an altitude of about 1,500 meters above sea level.
Antananarivo is the country's largest city and the hub of communications, economy, and administration. The city produces food products, cigarettes, and textiles. It is also home to the University of Madagascar and the Rural College of Ambohitsorohitra (also known as Dambatob Rural College).
The city was founded around 1625. In 1797, it became the capital of the Merina Kingdom. Under King Radama I, the territories he conquered made Antananarivo the capital of almost all of Madagascar. The French captured the city in 1895, and it became part of the French protectorate of Madagascar.
The name Antananarivo means “City of a Thousand.” The French name for the city is Tananarive.
