Ananuri, a castle complex perched along the turquoise waters of the Aragvi River, is a prime example of Georgia’s unique blended architectural aesthetic. It was home to the Aragvi feudal dynasty during the 18th century, and was the staging grounds of numerous battles that Georgians both won and lost.
There are two churches in the fortress, devoted to the Virgin Mary, both are perfect example of Georgian medieval architecture; watchtower and defensive walls of the fortress, which used to serve as protection against invaders.
After surviving hundreds of years of trouble, the complex was last inhabited in 19th century.
While only few of the historical monuments in Georgia are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Ananuri has been in the running to be one since 2007.
